Hi Mandy :) Oh dear, I can imagine a 10 year old would be gutted. I don't know about bad luck, but I do know that they have an awful smell. Hawthorn, at least this one, is pollinated by blow flies, and the flowers smell like rotten meat in order to attract the flies. Maybe that was the real reason they weren't wanted inside! Our tree is 'down the back' of the farm too, well away from the house!

I remember very carefully picking a bunch of these from 'down the back' for Mum when I was about 10, taking them inside, very proud, and being very hastily ushered outside because, apparently, it is VERY bad luck to have hawthorn flowers inside. GUTTED!

Hi Jo :) It's a path along the Waikato River in Hamilton, just below the museum. The building on the right is the rowing club. I moved from Hamilton back to Hawkes Bay last year, to marry my 3rd husband, and I still miss Hamilton, it's a great city. I don't miss the weather though, awesome weather in Hawke's Bay :)
